Last Making | December 2020
December 1, 2020 @ 9:00 am - December 6, 2020 @ 5:00 pm$1000 – $1800
this is a 6 day long last making class, limited to 3 students, in which you’ll build a pair of anatomical lasts designed, styled and 100% made from scratch.
I’ve been making shoes/boots on my home made lasts for a few years now and have run this as a one on one private class a few times now. I am finally ready to offer a group last making class!
As some of you know I’ve been teaching various styles of ‘Non-Lasted” shoe constructions for many years… I have been “Slip-Lasting” many of my shoes/boots but until recently haven’t been designing or building those shoes on a last. A few years ago i built my first pair of lasts from scratch and have been experimenting with and refining the shape ever since. In that time I’ve learned a lot about lasts and am still learning… there is sooo much to unpack when moving from making shoes designed on a casting of the foot -vs- designing shoes on a ready made last and or on the lasts i made to be shaped more like my own feet. I’ll talk freely with you about my experiences and what i’ve observed working with the different forms. We’ll talk about the relatively short history of producing shoes/boots on lasts and why lasts are shaped they way they are compared to the actual shapes of our feet.
We’ll be using a band saw, drill press and grinders as well as hand rasps to make and shape our hardwood lasts. Some wood shop experience would be helpful but is not completely necessary. You will leave with a pair of lasts designed and made by you from start to finish!
Once your lasts are done lets talk about making a pair of shoes or boots on them too!
COVID safety precautions: I’ve moved the class space to the garage and limited class sizes to accommodate smaller groups. On warm days well keep the rollup garage door open with fans moving air out of the building. I’m also currently installing a ventilation system that will move air up and out of the shop as well as pull glue fumes creating a healthier class environment. Please bring and be prepared to wear a mask… even if you aren’t concerned for your own safety each class is a shared space and we need to look out for one another now more than ever. Hand sanitizer and wipes will be provided and each student will have an individual box of tools that only you use. For tools like sewing machines and grinders that student share we will do our very best to keep them clean and wiped down between uses. Please check in with me about your concerns and or please feel free to share with me and the group about your COVID experience… IE whether you’ve been tested negative or positive and or for antibodies. Openness and transparency together with first hand experience and knowledge might help us all be a little more secure about what we’re signing up for!
Also… i have been twice tested (june/july) and the results were negative. I and others within my immediate germ circle were very sick in late february and into march… one of those people tested positive for covid antibodies in late june. i’m still working toward getting tested for antibodies as i believe we all had it back in feb/march. Just saying all that out loud in an effort to be fully transparent.
