Knee High Welted Moccasin Boot | January 2020
January 28 @ 9:00 am - February 2 @ 5:00 pm$550 – $1100
This is a 6-day shoemaking class, in which we will all build a custom pair of fully lined knee high welted moccasin boots with a Vibram outsole.
this is a brand new class based on a pair of boots i made nearly 20 years ago with my mentor Bill Shannor (of Bonny and Wills) in Ashland Oregon. This design has long been my most popular… infact someone actually bought the pair off my feet at a renaissance faire after i’d been wearing them everyday for 5 years! Folks have asked me for years to run this class so here it is…!
In this and every class, we begin by making a casting of your foot (they will truly be custom built). We’ll discuss the past 200,000 years of footwear evolution then move on to patterning and leather selection, cutting and skiving, then stitching and assembly. We will be using industrial, walking-foot and post-bed sewing machines in this class to assemble the uppers. Some sewing machine experience is helpful but not required. Once the upper and sole are attached, we move onto closure, finishing, and finally attaching and trimming the soles.
We cover a wide assortment of leather working techniques, tools and how to use them as well as methods for gaining leverage so you don’t wear your body out over time. At the heart of what I’m really sharing are a few simple methods of attaching the upper to the sole using the barest few specialized hand tools possible in an effort to make the process more accessible and repeatable at home.
This welted moccasin style is commonly referred to as the “Renaissance Moccasin” or “Festival Boot” and was first made by a fellow names Hank Zander in the early 1970″s. This side lace modern moccasin was popularized at hippy music festivals and renaissance fares thought the 80’s and 90’s and is how i got my start as a professional shoe maker! As i mentioned earlier i first learned to make them with Bill Shanor who brought a real level of refinement to the style after learning from Scott Walker of Walking Liberty Moccasins. I still make em the way Bill taught me with folded welts and rolled and stitched full leather laces, turned edges and full pig skin liners…
This pair of shoes could easily last you for the rest of your life if well taken care of!
Space is limited to 4 students per class and they fill quickly.
